Which seals can a home restorer fit over a weekend, and which are worth handing to a specialist?
Most of a rubber kit is well within reach of a patient home restorer — and doing it yourself, panel by panel, is one of the more satisfying parts of a rebuild. A few items, though, are worth a specialist.
Great DIY jobs
Door and boot seals, pinchweld, bailey channel, belt weatherstrips, grommets and body plugs are all straightforward with basic hand tools, some rubber-safe lubricant and a bit of care not to stretch the rubber.
Worth handing over
Windscreen and rear glass rubbers are the main exception — fitting glass into new rubber risks cracking expensive (and sometimes irreplaceable) glass. Many owners fit every other seal themselves and let a windscreen specialist do the glass. Either way, order the complete kit so nothing holds up the job.
